How to Switch Industries Without Skipping a Beat
From one PR girl to another, at any point in your career an industry pivot is a very real possibility. You may find that the opportunities available to you don’t exactly lineup with your dream job. You may get your degree and find that you don’t know what kind of public relations you want to practice *raises hand.* Your agency may even branch into a new industry with new clients (we’re looking at you Sonder Grace). If just imagining having to navigate uncharted territory is enough to put you in a tizzy, we feel you. But have no fear, because these three tools will help you navigate any career change like the #girlboss you are.
1. Instagram: If you keep up with ACPR’s blog, you already know that this app is a publicist’s BFF. It’s our go-to for getting to know editors, build rapport and secure opportunities for clients. Instagram can also be used as a window into a new industry. A mass follow of editors, hashtags, publications, and even competing brands, can provide you with (almost) all the knowledge you’ll need to break into a new industry. Just make sure to brush up on your social media etiquette before you start sliding into those DMs.
2. Consumer & Trade Magazines: Maybe it’s my inner millennial speaking, but I was surprised when I found that not all editors or print outlets are active on social media. Dedicate some time to go to your local bookstore and check out the newsstand. Identify new magazines that you may not be familiar with and scan mastheads for new contacts. Get a feel for the types of stories they write, take note of industry jargon, and familiarize yourself with the writing style. Trust us, that knowledge will shine through in your pitching and editors will definitely take notice!
3. Coworkers: Your colleagues are indispensable resources! Everyone started their PR journey feeling like they were out of their element, in one way or another. Turn to them for guidance, whether that means asking to see writing samples or the names of editors you need to follow on Instagram. But, do not abuse this privilege! Always stay grateful and remember to pass along your knowledge some day — we’re firm believers in good karma.
