20 Questions With: Emily Tozer
Emily Tozer is the 26 year old Senior Marketing and Content Editor at Oscar de la Renta, the iconic fashion couture house, and founder of The Glam Files, a fashion and beauty blog. An Illinois native and alumna of Drake University (B.A. Magazine Journalism), post-college Emily found herself at Divine Caroline, a Meredith Corporation beauty website, but she had aspirations that were outside of the Midwest. After landing a coveted role at Net-a-Porter in New York City, she decided to pack up her life (and blog, which had gained a loyal following) and say goodbye to the Midwest for good. At Net-a-Porter, Emily quickly worked her way up the corporate ladder (while simultaneously amassing a lustworthy closet of designer goods), gaining valuable experience in product writing. It was this experience that later helped her seal the deal on a marketing job at Oscar de la Renta (can we say #goals?!). Emily is tenacious, whip smart, and fearless in the pursuit of her dreams. She’s clearly got a way with words and pulling together an #OOTD (we’ll say it again, #goals), and we love that she approaches life with kindness. From sharing her first job out of college to her wardrobe staple, we’ve tasked Emily with 20 of our favorite questions.
1. What was your first job out of college?
I was the Associate E-Commerce Editor at Divine Caroline, a Meredith Corporation online magazine that I had started working on as an intern during my senior year of college. I worked at the headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa—it was my first taste of the corporate world. The magazine went through a lot of changes while I was there, and the staff was incredibly small so it was a wonderful opportunity and learning experience.
2. When you were in college, what did you think you’d be doing today?
I thought I would be working at a print magazine, what with majoring in magazine journalism and all. But I knew I wanted to be in New York City, so when I was offered a job at Net-A-Porter, retail, I took it and made the move.
3. What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?
Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.
4. Can you recall the moment you felt like you hit a groove in your career?
I don’t know if I’ve had a moment yet where I’ve felt like I’ve made it. I’m still learning so much and that’s exactly how I want it to be right now.
5. What’s the first thing you do when you get to the office every morning?
Make a cup of tea and check my emails—the Oscar de la Renta emails are definitely the most glamorous start to the day. 😉
6. What’s one thing you do daily to stay organized?
I keep a million tabs and windows open until that task has been handled.
7. How do you sign off emails?
At work I’ll often let my signature be the sign off, otherwise I usually write ‘Best’ by default!
8. What’s the one character trait that’s vital for success in what you do?
Being open to new ideas. I think it’s so important to always be learning and thinking outside of the box.
9. Can you share a career goal for 2017?
A big one was to shift into a more marketing-focused role—check!
10. What’s your favorite magazine?
I love Porter magazine. It’s full of beautiful images and wonderful articles, and I’ll often read it front to back in one sitting.
11. Do you have a can’t-live-without beauty product?
Too many! The first one that comes to mind is the First Aid Beauty moisturizer. I have pretty dry skin and I’ve been using this one for nearly a year (a lifetime in beauty blogger years). I also can’t live without a good face mask—my absolute favorite skincare step.
12. What’s your go-to cocktail?
Anything with champagne.
13. Do you have a wardrobe staple?
All-black everything and ballet flats.
14. Do you have a spirit animal?
Not that I know of…
15. Do you collect anything?
The cute postcards that come with the check when my boyfriend and I go out to a fun restaurant or bar.
16. How do you stay healthy?
Everything in moderation. And gummy vitamins.
17. What’s the best hashtag of all time?
I love #ihavethisthingwithchandeliers. It’s probably one of my most used hashtags, I’m always taking photos of beautiful chandeliers in restaurants, museums, anywhere!
18. What’s your decorating style?
I’m not sure what it’s called in interior design terms! It’s similar to my personal style—I love lots of neutrals with one statement piece; like I have a giant red overdyed rug but all my furniture is white or dark wood.
19. What do you eat for breakfast most days?
A banana, yogurt or a smoothie and Earl Gray tea.
20. What’s your dream vacation?
I have so many! Morocco is at the top of my travel bucket list right now; I’m dying to go to Chefchaouen and Marrakech.
